February 5, 2006

“There is a continuing debate on the effect systems like Selector are having on radio with some critics saying they contribute to a uniformity of output (see Barnard 2000: 132) but Dick Stone at Trent FM disagrees. ‘I think Selector can take away some of the spontaneity of radio if it’s in the wrong hands. I think in the right hands it can actually make t more effective,’ he says. ‘We hire people to transcend the format - they still do the format but they don’t make it sound as if they’re doing it that’s their skill. We don’t hire them [presenters] to pick the music because they’re not hired for their great music knowledge - they’re hired to entertain and find something interesting to say.’ (Fleming, 2002: 56)
